Garnering millions in bio-related investments this year alone, Charleston is earning global recognition as an emerging biomedical market. To date, more than 35 medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers, and 50 research laboratories and development companies have found Charleston to be an ideal location for success—with its strategic East Coast location, renowned quality of life and pool of highly-educated talent.

The Charleston region is proud to join nearly 20,000 other exhibitors and attendees at the BIO International Convention in San Diego, California, June 23-26, to showcase its recent developments in the industry and share why the region is a competitive player in the life science industry.

Just last week, New World Pharmaceuticals, LLC and sister company, New World Consumer Products, announced they would relocate their headquarters—a $21 million investment that is expected to create more than 38 jobs over the next five years.

Similarly, Aeterna Zentaris Inc., a specialty biopharmaceutical company, recently selected the Charleston region as its newest location for the company’s North American business and global commercial operations. The $1 million investment is anticipated to create 60 new jobs.

Charleston also expects to generate $1 billion in investment with a new mixed-use biotech real estate project. This new development, which will be located near the Medical University of South Carolina, is expected to include up to 3,000 residential units along with biotechnical research centers equipped with an incubator and accelerator.

These new developments will join Charleston’s already established life science cluster hosting numerous biomedical companies that employ more than 1,600 workers locally—including industry players like Belimed, Inc., a world leader in infection control innovation, and TRUMPF Medical Systems, Inc., a global pioneer in laser and medical technology. The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is Charleston’s largest biomedical employer and asset, employing nearly 11,000, and conducting more than $243 million in research annually.

If you’re at BIO International this year, we invite you to meet our Vice President of Global Business Development, Mike Graney at the South Carolina Pavilion (Booth 1821) to learn about Charleston’s biomedical growth and other business advantages.
