Charlotte Observer Highlights Things to Do in Charleston For Children & Adults

The Charlotte Observer recently ran an article, Charleston Has Plenty To Keep You Busy, on things to do in Charleston for adults and kids. Travel editor, John Bordsen, begins with numerous suggestions for adults, including: strolling around downtown Charleston on foot or by carriage or DASH trolley, stopping at White Point Gardens and The Joe Riley Stadium, suggestions on where to dine and enjoy an adult beverage and where to enjoy Charleston nightlight.

He describes the highlights to check out while walking in Charleston:

King Street is primed for funky and fashionable shopping, from John Street south to the bend near Wentworth and on to Market Street and a little beyond. The open-air City Market offers everything from Charleston refrigerator magnets to jewelry and paintings by local artists. Near the sea-facing Battery, the landscape turns residential, with block after block of narrow two-and-three story homes and shops, many from the 1700s and early 1800s. Behind some beautiful wrought-iron privacy fences are another Lowcountry touch: small, elaborate gardens.

Many of Bordsen’s suggestions come from The Charleston City Paper’s “Best of Charleston 2010” picks, which mentions the following establishments: Basil Thai Cuisine (best downtown restaurant), FIG (best restaurant), Fulton Five (best romantic restaurant) and Carolina’s (best restaurant you haven’t been to in a while), Gene’s Haufbrau (best cold beer) , Midtown Bar & Grill (best new bar) and Muse (best place to drink 100 wines by the glass), Music Farm (best rock music club), Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ (best jazz and blues club) and Theatre 99 (best local theater).

If you’re traveling with children, Bordsen suggests visiting the SC Aquarium, Patriots Point, Charles Towne Landing, Caw Caw Interpretive Center and James Island County Park.
