King Street To Go Car-Free Once a Month

On May 16, Charleston closed King Street to cars for the first time to let pedestrians and bicyclists enjoy the shops and restaurants along the route. The first effort was led by Do the Charleston, and now five months later, city officials have made the decision to make King Street car-free on the second Sunday of each month.

Beginning Oct. 10 from 1-6 p.m., pedestrians will take over King Street from Broad Street to Calhoun Street allowing visitors to enjoy outside dining and shop in the open-air.

Need a place to park the car and enjoy a day on King Street without your vehicle? The city parking garage at Queen and King streets will offer free parking during the “Second Sunday on King Street” events.

I didn’t make it to the first event, but will be excited to enjoy King Street outside during the cooler months!
