BAE Systems was one of 16 contractors selected to provide technology systems to the Army, according to the Department of Defense.

The contract is worth $997 million, which will be divided among the contractors. BAE’s portion of the work will be performed in North Charleston and the project is expected to be finished by 2017.

BAE will provide components and systems to aid in the protection of U.S. forces overseas.

BAE Systems also was recently awarded a contract modification for $108.4 million to provide Hercules heavy equipment recovery evacuation vehicles and parts to the U.S. Army and Marine Corps.

That work will be done at the company’s facilities in Aiken and York, Pa., BAE said. Delivery of the vehicles will begin in April 2013 and continue through December 2013.

Hercules is a recovery system used during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The vehicles provide the ability to recover 70-ton combat vehicles, including M1A1 and M1A2 tanks. The vehicles also offer additional armor protection for soldiers and increased engine horsepower, towing muscle, lifting strength and winching power.

Using remanufactured hulls supplied by the U.S. Government, BAE Systems will provide 29 vehicles to the U.S. Army and 16 vehicles to the U.S. Marine Corps.
