Boeing Co. investing another $1B, creating 2,000 jobs in S.C.

The Boeing Co. is committing to create 2,000 jobs and invest another $1 billion in South Carolina during the next eight years to qualify for economic incentives being proposed in the General Assembly this week, a Boeing spokeswoman said this morning.

“With unprecedented demand for commercial airplanes — including a forecast of another 34,000 airplanes required over the next 20 years — Boeing is positioned for significant and sustained growth in the years ahead,” said Candy Eslinger, a Boeing spokeswoman, in an email. “And we have been investing in our people, products and facilities to deliver that growth and to better serve our customers.”

Since 2009, Boeing has invested more than $1 billion and has more than 6,000 employees working at its campus in North Charleston.

“We are excited about our future and the investments we are making in South Carolina to ensure our operations here are successful for generations to come,” Eslinger said.

The announcement caps an already busy 2013 for the aerospace giant.

In March, the Charleston County Aviation Authority agreed to sell about 320 acres of airport property to Boeing for $12.5 million. Days later, the company announced plans to reshuffle some of its IT workforce to North Charleston; and in February, land filings showed Boeing is adding a Dreamlifter facility in North Charleston.

“Boeing South Carolina is constructing a new Dreamlifter Operations Center at the North Charleston site,” said company spokesman Rob Gross at the time in an email. “Boeing is committed to South Carolina, and this actively demonstrates that we plan to be here for a very long time. As we’ve said before, we’re not just creating jobs in South Carolina; we’re creating careers for generations to come.”
