Charleston Containers Up 10% in SeptemberOct. 1, 2002 S.C. Ports Authority
Charleston's total container volume in September topped 131,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent units), compared to 118,000 TEU last year. This followed an all-time record month in August when Charleston, the nation's fourth busiest container port, handled 149,000 TEU. Loaded inbound containers through Charleston rose 14% from September 2001. Meanwhile, loaded export container volume was off 2% from last year. Empty export TEU rose 54% in September from the same month last year, as containers were repositioned to overseas markets. Through the first quarter of fiscal year 2003 (July - September), total Charleston container volume increased 11% to 409,000 TEU, up from 367,000 TEU in the same period last year.
