Charleston ranked among the world’s best in Travel + Leisure magazine poll

Charleston, SC – Charleston is the 6th “Top City in the United States & Canada” according to Travel + Leisure magazine’s tenth annual World’s Best Poll, featured in the August 2005 issue. Also honored this year were Charleston area accommodation properties including The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Resort and Planter’s Inn. Independence Air, which services the Charleston Area, also received kudos, ranking 3rd Top Domestic Airline.

As a T+L Best destination for 2005, Charleston accompanies five U.S. and four Canadian cities to receive this honor – New York, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Chicago, Vancouver, Quebec City, Montreal, Victoria, British Columbia, and New Orleans respectively.

Rick Mosteller, Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau, responded to the accolade, “It’s an honor to be a part of such distinguished company. Travel + Leisure has always been known for adhering to impeccable standards. In my opinion, this repeated distinction solidifies Charleston’s place among the great cities of our time.”

This is not the first time Charleston has been honored as a top visitor destination. In addition, to Travel & Leisure, Charleston has consistently placed in the top 10 domestic travel destinations for the past 12 years by Conde Nast Traveler magazine’s prestigious Readers Choice Awards. Marjabelle Young Stewart, the nationally renowned etiquette expert, has also honored Charleston’s residents. She found Charleston to be the most polite city in the nation for the last 11 consecutive years, and has included Charleston in the ranking every year of her list’s 27-year existence.
