Fast-growing manufacturer of boat and utility trailers moves into New Century Industrial Park near St. George
Feb. 1, 2005For Immediate Release
“The leaders of this community worked very hard to show us that the right workforce was available for our needs,” said Brett Gowans, operations manager of the company. “When officials decided to host a job fair and over 100 qualified people attended, we knew we’d find the workers right here in this community to succeed.”
A family-owned company, Road King Trailers specializes in a wide range of quality trailers for powerboats, pontoon boats, skiffs, Jon boats, sail boats, cat powerboats and personal watercraft. “We offer all of our boat and watercraft trailers in both aluminum and galvanized finishes,” said Gowans. “We also offer motorcycle and utility trailers.”
With approximately 90 employees at two other locations, Ocala, Fla. and Asheville, N.C., Road King Trailers owner Larry Hamm, sees the new St. George facility as offering a strategic location with access to both I-95 and I-26. “Ultimately, we found an ideal building that we could move into fast and allowed for easy access to two major interstates,” said Hamm.
Today’s announcement was facilitated by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, a public/private partnership tasked with attracting new business investment to Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.
Ted Creech, Chairman of the Alliance, welcomed the arrival of the company to the region. “Time and again the Charleston region is recognized for its exceptionally strong base of skilled workers. We’re pleased to see a number of these skilled trades people being given an opportunity to help Road King Trailers grow and prosper.”
Chris Murphy, Dorchester County Council Chairman, welcomed the company, saying: “For quite some time our County Council has recognized the need to expand economic development and create new jobs in the upper portion of the county.”
Dorchester County Council Vice Chairman Skip Elliott also added his appreciation. “Road King Trailers’ decision to be a part of our business community is the result of the hard work of our Council members and economic development team.”
George Tupper, chairman of the Dorchester Economic Development Board, recognized the region’s cohesiveness in winning the project. “I would like to salute the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the Charleston Regional Development Alliance for the professional assistance they have provided to Dorchester County to bring this investment to St. George.”
St. George Mayor, David Sojourner, also celebrated the news. “The opportunity for 30 new jobs in St. George is a boost our community needs,” he said. “I’m proud of the work that was done between the town, Edisto Electric and Dorchester County to bring a new industry here.”
In facilitating any announcement, such as today’s by Road King Trailers, the Alliance works with a broad network of allies and partner organizations. A key player in the economic development activity here is the State of South Carolina.
"If you look at the workforce there in Dorchester County and so many other parts of our state we're clearly competitive," said Governor Mark Sanford. "Now we've got to couple that strength with real competitiveness on the tax front so that more announcements like this are possible. For us, that starts with income tax relief so that up-and-coming companies like Road King can continue to grow, prosper and create new jobs."
Commerce Secretary Bob Faith said, “We are thrilled that this great company recognized the wealth of advantages South Carolina offers—namely a highly motivated work force and an unbeatable transportation network. At the state and local levels, we look forward to getting behind Road King Trailers’ success every step of the way.”
