Firefly Looking to expand operations

The masterminds of Firefly spirits is looking to expand its Wadmalaw Island operations, but Charleston County Council must first sign off on the deal.

It’s become a staple on every liquor store and bar around the state. It’s the firefly brand of vodka. The concept came to fruition on Wadamalaw Island. Co-owner Jim Irvin helped create the sweet tea flavor.

“Our company has now grown to where we are selling in 46 states across the United States, we are in Canada,” said Irvin.

The idea is home grown, but the product is actually manufactured in Florida and Kentucky. Irvin’s planned development agreement does not allow him to make firefly at his vineyard.

“Originally the planned development included a winery and not a distillery for the vodka product that he is making,” said Dan Pennick with the Charleston County Planning Department.

Pennick says some bottles were manufactured on site until the county told Irvin he is in violation. To change the policy, a hearing was held on Tuesday, giving Irvin and the public a chance to state their case

“We just want to have our home here. We make the most of it in other parts and as we get bigger and can do it, we want to bring it back here to South Carolina,” said Irvin.

The makers of Firefly vodka spearheaded a change in South Carolina state law to make it cheaper for someone to open a distillery. The license used to cost $50,000, but in June 2007, the price tag changed to a thousand dollars.

The county planning department says neighbors worry the change could lead to a safety problems with an increase in traffic in a quiet area.

“Yes the economy part is good, but it could destroy a certain type of environment, a sense of place in Charleston County and Wadmalaw,” said Pennick.

Irvin says the new operation will add 12 jobs but a few hurdles remain before this local brand can truly be a product of South Carolina. Charleston County Council will vote on Irvin’s request at next Thursday’s meeting.
