Force Dynamics, a joint venture between Ladson-based Force Protection Inc. and General Dynamics, has been awarded a contract for three lightweight versions of the Cheetah combat vehicle.

The contract is one of five awarded being under a program overseen by the Army’s Tank Automotive and Armaments Command.

Tacom is testing all-terrain, mine-resistant vehicles from different manufacturers that are vying to build a potential $2 billion-plus fleet to be dispatched to places like Afghanistan.

A winner is expected to be picked in about two months, Reuters news service reported.

Force Dynamics previously built two Cheetahs valued at $1 million for Tacom to determine whether the vehicle meets the military’s requirements.
