The owner of one of the Charleston region’s oldest and most iconic manufacturing plants is on the fast track.

A Fortune magazine list identified KapStone Paper and Packaging as one of the country’s fastest-growing businesses.

The Illinois-based company, whose “aromatic” flagship paper mill is on the Cooper River in North Charleston, was ranked No. 5 on the compilation of 100 corporations. The findings were based on three years of revenue growth, earnings per share information, overall stock market return and other factors.

When the list was sorted by sector, KapStone topped the industrial rankings.

Fortune noted that after the company bought North Charleston’s MeadWestvaco Corp. paper mill in 2008 for $485 million, its client list went from 100 to more than 400 companies. Despite the recession, the company was able to raise prices and post a 26 percent sales gains for the year, it added.
