The Clemson University Restoration Institute hired a Washington-based firm to develop a master plan for renovating the former Navy base in North Charleston, the university announced today.

Burt Hill Inc., a planning, architecture and engineering firm, will work with university faculty and staff to develop an 86-acre research park that will focus on advanced materials, community revitalization, historic preservation and materials conservations, renewable energy, resilient infrastructure and restoration ecology. The company also worked with The Noisette Co. at the former Navy base.

Planning and initial design work are expected to take about a year to complete.

The goal is to turn the 86 acres into a state-of-the-art research park that can spawn spin-off businesses and attract public-private partnerships and private development.

Clemson also hired several local firms to work on the project.

Clemson continues to move closer to development. In July, the university hired Mount Pleasant-based McKellar & Associates to design the first two building restorations.
