On any given day, fourth grade teacher Beth Wojcik might don a clown wig or a grass skirt to grab her students’ attention and pull them into the day’s lesson.

Or maybe she’ll do a hands-on activity, such as building a roller coaster or electric circuits, to help her class better understand a science concept.

The energy and effort Wojcik puts into her classroom every single day has helped earn her the title of Lower School Teacher of the Year from the South Carolina Independent School Association.

“What impressed (the judges) the most with Beth was her relentless – their words, not mine – preparation to tailor her subjects for her students,” said Larry Watt, executive director of the association. “It was an uncanny amount of preparation into each and every lesson that resulted in students being spellbound. Her lessons were captivating, inspiring and fun for students.”

Wojcik was named the statewide winner earlier this week at a ceremony in Orangeburg. The Coastal Christian Preparatory School math and science teacher beat out 80 other nominees for the award. The association has 107 member schools that employ about 3,600 teachers.
