Navy Yard at Noisette named one of nation’s top 10 green built neighborhoods

Noisette News Release
Natural Home Magazine has just named the Navy Yard at Noisette in North Charleston as one of the nation’s “Top 10 – America’s Best Green-Built Neighborhoods”, in the publication’s January/February 2008 issue.

The Topeka, Kansas-based magazine, part of the Ogden Publications, Inc., first visited North Charleston in 2003, in which Editor in Chief Robyn Griggs Lawrence examined questions about brownfield redevelopment in “Can this City be greened?” Nearly four years later, projects like Oak Terrace Preserve, managed by the Noisette Company for the City of North Charleston, and plans for massive infrastructure improvements and work-live lofts at the Navy Yard landed Noisette a “Top 10” listing in the magazine.

“This selection shows just how much progress we’ve made at the Navy Yard since 2003,” says Noisette CEO John L. Knott, Jr. “Natural Home has selected an outstanding list of sustainable developments throughout the US, and it is an honor for the City and entire Noisette team to be in the company of widely recognized sustainable developments.”

Selections were based on developments that work towards sustainability by incorporating green building, energy efficiency and reuse of previously developed land. Enrollment in programs like the United States Green Building Council’s LEED for Neighborhoods, LEED for Homes, or EarthCraft home standards, were taken into account.

North Charleston was listed sixth in Natural Home, which was based on alphabetical order, not prominence. Projects like Mueller in Austin, Texas, Stapleton in Denver, Colorado, and the Pringle Creek Community in Salem, Oregon, were included in the magazine’s listing.

The Navy Yard at Noisette is a 340-acre, mixed-use sustainable urban redevelopment located on portions of the former Charleston Naval Base, one of the largest projects of its type in North America. The Noisette Community Master Plan won the American Society of Landscape Architects award for excellence in urban planning in 2005.
