Key element of Dreamliner construction plan takes flight

The Boeing Co. came a step closer to solidifying the logistics chain for its 787 Dreamliner with the first test flight of its new large cargo freighter. The dramatically revamped 747 has an enlarged upper fuselage designed to carry assembly components for the 787 from Charleston, Wichita, Kan., Nagoya, Japan, and Grottaglie, Italy, to Boeing’s plant in Everett, Wash., for final assembly. Biotech project could launch local kidney-producing industry

Biotech researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina and Clemson University believe they might have a solution for people needing kidney transplants. They call it the Bioengineered Kidney Project, and it involves printing out layers of human cells, fusing the cells to form tissue and assembling that tissue into kidneys. Continue reading

Trident Tech ‘Enterprise Campus’ to house film studios

A movie studio complex is in the works for the Lowcountry. Tentatively called Trident Studios of South Carolina, the complex is slated to occupy 10 to 15 acres of Trident Technical College’s forthcoming Enterprise Campus, a 38-acre parcel owned by the college and adjacent to the college’s main campus in North Charleston. City welcomes Art Institute of Charleston

The school’s decision to locate in Charleston was announced in June after months of planning between Riley and The Art Institutes, a collection of 32 schools across the nation under the umbrella of Education Management Corp. The Charleston school is expected to be a branch of The Art Institute of Atlanta and will offer associate degrees in culinary arts, graphic design, interior design, interactive media design and photographic imaging. Shimano American Corporation expands distribution operation

Within three years of opening its first local distribution center, Shimano American Corporation has announced an expanded presence in the Charleston region. The company recently completed construction of a 102,000-square-foot distribution facility in North Charleston’s Palmetto Commerce Park and will increase staff to 15 full-time positions. Officials with the U.S. Patent Office have approved the initial patent for the new Hybrid Spread Spectrum (HSS) technology licensed and marketed by Navigational Sciences Inc.
