The South Carolina State Ports Authority is participating in a national program to develop and maintain the best environmental practices in its operations.

The effort was established by the American Association of Port Authorities and the Global Environment and Technology Foundation. South Carolina is one of five port operations participating.

The authority plans to analyze fuel operations at its Charleston terminal. The agency buys about one million gallons of fuel each year for cranes and lifting equipment and last year switched to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel.

Other agencies in the program are in California and Georgia.
