The Mediterranean Shipping Co., one of the world’s premiere shipping cargo lines, is breaking ground today on its new 45,000-square-foot corporate headquarters in Mount Pleasant. The $7 million facility, on a seven-acre parcel at Central Square at Watermark, will be completed in August 2008.

The new corporate office effectively doubles the company’s regional operations here.

MSC has said it could increase its work force to more than 400 within the next few years.

The groundbreaking marks MSC’s third expansion in the Charleston region since it first established a presence here in 1993. The company, which currently has 200 employees, has maintained about 24,000 square feet of office space at 550 Long Point Road since 1999.

The local office oversees MSC’s activities at Charleston, Savannah, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla., ports.

In addition to monitoring its marine operations, the office also is a major financial center for MSC, overseeing accounts payable and cost control for its operations throughout the United States.

The company has said that while it could have chosen to expand in any one of the cities in which it is located—it seriously considered Houston, Baltimore and several cities in New Jersey—remaining in Charleston was an obvious choice given the company’s good experience in the area over the past several years.

MSC operates 340 ships around the world and has 18 North American offices.
