A Hanahan-based small business is getting some recognition for its ability to grow its payroll.

Cassius Butts, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Region IV administrator, is due to drop by UEC Electronics today and tour its 48,000-square-foot production facilities on Howard Street.

UEC, an electronics engineering and manufacturing firm, recently earned a spot in the “SBA 100,” which is made up of 100 businesses from around nation. Each has created at least 100 jobs since receiving assistance from the federal agency.

UEC had 10 employees when founder Rebecca Ufkes first visited the Charleston Small Business Development Center, an SBA partner, in 1998. She regularly received guidance on government contracting from the center and later from SBA staff. Last year, Ufkes took second place in the administration’s Small Business Person of the Year competition.

Today, UEC has 130 employees and counting with openings for 37 more positions.
