May 11, 2010 – Southwest Airlines, one of the United States’ most successful low-fare airlines, announced today it will expand by launching commercial flight service at the Charleston International Airport.

While destinations have yet to be announced, new service is expected to begin in the next 12 months. The addition of Southwest Airlines will enhance the Charleston region’s ability to support its strategic business recruitment, business expansion and retention programs.

The Charleston Regional Development Alliance Chairman Mitchell Bohannon welcomed the news: “This is very exciting for the Charleston region because it improves our ability to attract and retain high-value / high-tech jobs and talent, entrepreneurs and capital investment.” Bohannon added: “The goal of the CRDA is to build a globally competitive, sustainable regional economy, which is why we worked closely with the Charleston County Aviation Authority, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, and the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau to support the effort to attract Southwest Airlines.”
