Trade & Industry Development magazine, the leading national magazine dedicated to site selection, recently announced that three projects recruited by the South Carolina Department of Commerce in conjunction with local economic development allies were among the magazine’s fifth annual Corporate Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Award winners. The Boeing Company, Crane Co. and Red Ventures were among the 30 award winners selected this year.

The CiCi Awards recognize a select number of corporations and investments from a wide range of applicants throughout the country. The award focuses on both company investments and the economic developers responsible for securing the investment.

“The CiCi Awards continue to be especially important this year, just as they were last year, due to the prolonged economic downturn,” said Scott D. Swoger, publisher of Trade & Industry Development magazine and president of Due North Consulting Inc. “I find it extremely uplifting to see so many areas still striving for excellence, and preparing themselves for the inevitable upswing in the economy.”

According to the magazine’s editors, over 1,000 projects throughout the country were considered, concluding with 30 winners for the two categories – Corporate Investment and Community Impact.

This dual-awards program is unique in that it not only highlights the largest corporate investment projects in monetary infusions into chosen locations, but also recognizes those projects that may not involve large investments, but made the most notable impact on communities. The Impact Awards criteria takes into consideration the number of new jobs created, number of current jobs retained and how the project affected the community.

“South Carolina is again honored to be among the states recognized by Trade & Industry Development magazine’s CiCi Awards and being recognized with multiple awards is something that should give us all great pride. We have the finest recruiting team in the nation and these awards offer further indication that hard work together with a business climate second to none are a winning combination. As well, companies of this caliber choosing to invest in South Carolina during challenging economic times sends a powerful message that we are indeed a preferred location to do business,” said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.

In 2009, the South Carolina Department of Commerce recruitment efforts resulted in companies committing to create 18,004 new jobs and invest $2.4 billion in capital investment. The Boeing Company, Crane Co. and Red Ventures were among some of the largest job creation announcements in South Carolina in 2009. This is the fifth consecutive year that South Carolina has been recognized as part of the CiCi Awards.

Boeing plans to create some 4,000 new jobs and invest approximately $870 million in North Charleston, the largest single job and investment announcement in state history. Boeing was chosen as one of the 15 finalists for the Corporate Investment category. More information on the Corporate Impact awards is available at: tradeandindustrydev.com.

Crane Co. announced 1,000 new jobs and a $20 million investment in Barnwell County and Red Ventures announced 1,000 new jobs and a $20 million investment in Lancaster County. These two companies were chosen as two of the 15 finalists for the Community Impact category of the CiCi Awards.
