The Charleston call center for Verizon Wireless has announced that it is seeking an additional 65 full-time customer service professionals.

Openings have been created largely by internal promotions and transfers and will be filled in the next several weeks. The company said the new positions will have competitive salaries and benefits, including tuition reimbursement.

Through October, the North Charleston call center has invested $955,349 in tuition assistance for employees.

Verizon Wireless also received the Excellence in Workplace Diversity award in October from the S.C. Chamber of Commerce. Verizon Wireless won in the large employer category for its multifaceted approach to diversity. The company has invested in systems designed to help integrate blind or visually impaired applicants and staff members and has made efforts to recruit and hire bilingual representatives to serve customers.

Based in Basking Ridge, N.J., and with 71,000 employees nationwide, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone. In June, Verizon agreed to purchase Alltel for $28.1 billion. The merger between Verizon and Alltel, the fifth-largest wireless provider in the country, gave Verizon the most subscribers in the United States.
