Reclaiming and recycling end-of-life batteries and production scrap to produce battery components
Headquartered in Carson City, Nevada, and founded by Tesla's former Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder JB Straubel, Redwood Materials will use its Berkeley County, South Carolina campus to create a circular supply chain for electric vehicles. The company will onshore production of the most critical components in batteries--the anode and cathode--to reduce costs and emissions while securing the supply chain within the United States. All battery components will be built from as much recycled material as possible. The more than 600-acre campus, located at Camp Hall Commerce Park in Ridgeville, will initially produce enough anode and cathode material for 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cell production or 1 million electric vehicles each year. "South Carolina's commitment to creating a secure energy future and a competitive landscape for electric vehicle manufacturing, supported by a world-class workforce, fast and efficient logistics, zero-carbon electricity and a phenomenal site, made it a smart decision for Redwood to invest here...allowing us to support our current and future customers in the heart of America's battery belt. The company will also expand the building by nearly 75,000 square feet to accommodate for future additional production of electric motors. This project will allow Nucor --through UIG, LLC -- to produce and supply all the gases needed for the steel mill from the new Nucor-owned facility. MitoChem Therapeutics and Ichor Life Sciences will work together to advance the development of a small molecule pharmaceutical eyedrop, targeting the mitochondria to treat age-related eye disease. “An innovator in its space, MitoChem’s pre-clinical data is compelling,” Kelsey Moody, CEO of Ichor Life Sciences, said in the release. “Through our placement with MitoChem, we anticipate making significant advancements related to the treatment of age-related ocular disease while assessing the drugability of fundamental hallmarks of aging more broadly.”

PunchListUSA has now raised more than $49 million in equity capital since its inception in 2018. Sweetwater Private Equity and Morpheus Ventures led the latest funding round with additional investors including Home Depot Ventures, Second Century Ventures and Palm Drive Capital. PunchListUSA plans to use the funding to invest in proprietary technology to create instant repair and renovation estimates and open offices, which it aims to expand footprint to more than 30 markets through 2023. "We are building our team and technology to break down barriers,” said Min Alexander, co-founder and chief executive officer. “Our singular mission is to make homeownership more accessible and sustainable for the 220 million owners in the U.S.”

The company makes autoinjectors, pen injectors and other devices that let patients self-inject at home. The company also offers contract manufacturing and engineering services for products such as wafer testing equipment, laboratory handling equipment, neurosurgical devices and industrial equipment. "Our new U.S. site will be a state-of-the-art facility that will support our customers further with our end-to-end capabilities, providing high-quality drug delivery systems to end users -- patients around the world," said Ulrich Faessler, the company's medical chairman and CEO. The North Charleston facility "brings us closer to our customers and reduces the risk of supply chain disturbances," while also supporting the company's sustainability goals which include reducing global shipping distances. The Swiss-based company also has research and development facilities in Sweden and a design, testing and manufacturing campus in Taiwan. 2023 update: investment estimate raised to $165 million.

Charleston-based Good Growth Capital has raised $102 million to invest in early-stage technology businesses that develop products and services from so-called hard science. The new money will target “complex” and innovative science-based companies that “meet a pressing societal need” in areas such as the biomedical field and the environment, said managing partner and co-founder Amy Salzhauer. The financing is Good Growth’s third fund. She estimated that the newly raised capital could be spread among as many as 40 businesses. Founded in 2015, Good Growth has found a few deals close to home, including Charleston-based Questis, which developed a personal financial planning platform, and The New Primal, which makes all-natural food products such as spices, sauces and jerky.

The acquisition, which closed on April 29, 2022, will expand eGroup's reach nationally in the U.S. and dramatically expand its Microsoft 365, Azure, Security & Compliance, and Business Application cloud services. In October of 2021, eGroup received a substantial investment from two Dallas-based investment firms, Evolute Capital and Hunt Technology Ventures, allowing them to advance their current capabilities and continue to build a best-in-class IT services platform. A Charlotte-based manufacturer of mowers, trimmers and other outdoor power equipment has completed an expansion at its North Charleston distribution center, which also serves as the company's national distribution center, with hundreds of thousands of products passing through it each year. Daye, a subsidiary of China-based Ningbo Daye Garden Machinery Co., announced plans to open the center in late 2020. The 8060 Commerce Road location also will assemble lawnmowers prior to distribution. Matt Ragland, president of Daye North America, said "We have experienced firsthand the hospitality of South Carolina and the dynamic hardworking people who call it home." Ragland also said the distribution center's proximity to the Port of Charleston, where the company imports and exports its products, was a key to choosing the location initially.

The firm is expanding its Charleston County operations at 2137 Savannah Highway in West Ashley to keep up with a growing demand for its recreational products. This most recent expansion has tripled their electric vehicle manufacturing output over the last year. The newest models, which started rolling off the production line in 2020, include features such as an aluminum chassis, Bluetooth sound systems, reverse cameras, LED lighting and four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. The expansion is the third for Bintelli, which builds more than 40 customizable electric vehicles as well as parts and accessories that are sold in dealerships nationwide. In addition to its West Ashley plant and showroom, Bintelli has operations in North Charleston and Orangeburg. First Capital, which has assets of $387 million as of Dec. 31, 2021, has accrued so much interest in South Carolina that the company has moved its headquarters from North Carolina to 304 Meeting St. in Charleston and has converted from a North Carolina state-chartered bank to a South Carolina state-chartered bank. The conversion will have no impact on the bank’s customers, the company said in a news release. “The majority of our growth and assets are in South Carolina, and the Charleston area specifically. We believe converting to a South Carolina-chartered bank and moving the Bank’s headquarters to Charleston will enable us to best serve our customers and shareholders,” First Capital Bank Chairman and CEO Harvey Glick said. The bank has five branches and one loan production office in the Carolinas, including locations in Summerville and a newly opened office in Mount Pleasant. First Capital Bank will remain a subsidiary of First Capital Bancshares, Inc., which is also headquartered in Charleston.
