I recently returned from attending SCBIO’s annual life sciences conference held this year in Greenville, SC. The 450 attendees included top industry chief executives, leaders in government and higher education, biotechnology and pharmaceutical executives, clinicians and researchers, and industry supporters from across the globe – and the professional energy was amazing.

As a participant and sponsor, I engaged with and learned from the “right industry leaders” to help take our state and region to the next level! Life sciences has become the fastest-growing segment of our region’s and state’s knowledge economy.

With 678 life science companies in South Carolina, including 100+ in our three-county Charleston region, momentum for this high-impact industry cluster is growing and healthy. Partnerships, like the new and special one between the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Medtronic, the world’s largest medical equipment and device manufacturer, were on full display during the conference.

Charleston is building a robust life sciences industry ecosystem that supports both large scale advanced manufacturing operations and innovative startups and early stage companies looking to successfully enter the marketplace. We’re looking forward to the year ahead in this exciting industry!
