Building Charleston’s Ties to the Startup Nation

I recently traveled to Israel with a group of 20-30 people from across South Carolina on the 5th annual trip organized as part of the South Carolina-Israel Collaboration and organized by Conexx.  We spent five incredibly packed days traveling throughout Israel meeting business leaders, entrepreneurs, doctors, and academics, experiencing Israel’s start-up culture and introducing to our counterparts to opportunities in South Carolina.

Our agenda focused primarily on innovation and activities related to IT, life sciences / medical technology, and cyber security, including meeting with incubators and accelerators, attending industry conferences and hearing from start-ups and entrepreneurs across the country.  Our meetings included:

  • Visits to several incubators/accelerators across Israel, including NGT3 in Nazareth and the JVP Cyber Security Incubator in Beersheba
  • Time at several conferences, including the OurCrowd Global Investor Summit, the CyberTech conference, and the Trendlines 6th Annual Company Showcase
  • Meetings with life sciences and med tech incubators and tech transfer organizations, including Rambam Hospital and Hadassah Medical Center

Coming from Charleston, home of the Medical University of South Carolina and the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Atlantic, among other health, IT, and advanced technology companies, it was a great opportunity to learn how public and private collaboration is supporting growth in these key sectors throughout Israel.  The enthusiasm for developing innovative new ideas and growing them into successful companies was clear throughout our meetings.  It is clear that there are many opportunities for continued collaboration between Israel and South Carolina, especially for Charleston.
