Charleston is an International Business Destination

By Mike Graney

One of the things that attracted me to join the Charleston Regional Development Alliance (CRDA) is our strategic focus on international business and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) to Charleston | South Carolina | USA. We intentionally use the word “Global” to identify our Global Business Development team.

Why? Because Charleston’s economy is in a profoundly different place than it was just five years ago. No longer aspiring to be an international player, the Charleston metro is successfully competing and winning in the global marketplace.

Major multinational firms like Boeing, Mercedes-Benz Vans, and Volvo have chosen to compete globally with productive, efficient facilities in Charleston. Their supply chains are worldwide. Our team at CRDA is recruiting their suppliers to achieve the same advantages a Charleston location offers.

One of CRDA’s overarching goals is to raise the wage levels and standard of living for the people living in the Charleston region. There is some evidence that international firms pay higher wages in the U.S. than domestic firms, and the evidence is clear that multinational firms pay more, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the European Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies (EJIST), and Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA).

We recruit technology companies in diverse fields – IT, software, cyber, medtech, health IT – to name a few. Advanced manufacturing industries like aerospace and automotive, and other STEM-related companies all pay wages significantly higher than the U.S. and regional averages.

These firms think globally, locate on multiple continents and are on the lookout for places that can claim or recruit the talent to suit their needs. We believe the Charleston metro area offers the competitive advantages your company needs to be successful, and we stand ready to help you with your location/expansion into the U.S. market.
