Charleston Magazine Recipe Contest

Do you have a delicious recipe that features Lowcountry ingredients? If so, enter Charleston Magazine’sCharleston’s Next Food Star” recipe contest. There are four recipe categories, including appetizers, entrees, side dish and dessert. Each category has a required ingredient, and participants can enter as many categories as they wish. The deadline for entries is Monday, September by midnight.

  • Appetizer– Must contain locally harvested shellfish (shrimp, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or clams)
  • Entree– Must contain South Carolina raised or harvested pork, poultry, game (quail, venison, boar or duck) or sustainable local fish (flounder, grouper, trout, swordfish, tuna, wahoo, wreckfish or snapper)
  • Side dish– Must contain South Carolina grown vegetable or grain (such as Carolina Gold rice or grits)
  • Dessert- Must contain a locally or historically significant product (such as benne, Madeira or oranges)

Two finalists from each category will compete in a cook-off in October at the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s Palmer Campus amphitheater in front of a live audience, which will feature celebrity judges like the Lee Brothers and Executive Chef Frank Lee of Maverick Southern Kitchens. Winners will be featured in the December 2009 Food and Wine issue of Charleston Magazine, will be included in an online video and will receive culinary prizes.
