What do you want to be when you “grow up?” Plenty of people ask that, but what about ‘where do you want to be?’ Through a trio of engaging events, the newly launched CHS Intern Network initiative sought to encourage regional summer interns to consider building their careers here, in the Charleston region, after their internships conclude.
The CHS Intern Network, co-promoted by CRDA and the Charleston Metro Chamber, is a concept developed within and supported by members of the CRDA Organizational Engagement Committee. With quality talent in such high demand, the group explored how to engage seasonal interns to strengthen retention of this fresh talent pool in our region.
The series of events that were created blended information about career opportunities in the Charleston metro and job-seeking tools (like the CRDA Job Board), first-hand success stories from other young professionals, and guidance from seasoned pros – all while showcasing the local lifestyle through venues like the Charleston RiverDogs baseball stadium and Holy City Brewing.
Two hundred interns from 30+ companies signed up to participate in the inaugural year of this program. Participants were both natives of Charleston and from across the US – hailing from coast to coast – and representing a diverse array of industries, including aerospace, engineering, manufacturing, life sciences, finance, legal, and others.
Guest speakers from Sprockets, Boeing SC, First Citizens Bank, and Frampton Construction fielded lots of questions during the sessions with many conversations continuing on after the speaking programs concluded.
Talent retention programs like the CHS Intern Network serve to build connections with the next generation of leaders, so when they must soon decide where they want to build their careers, Charleston is at the top of their list!
