Due to the pandemic, it has been more than two years since my previous global business development mission. To say there is pent-up demand is an understatement. Recently, I posted a short message on Linked In announcing my trip to Germany to promote business expansion opportunities in Charleston. I received more comments and “likes” than I had for any previous post by far. Some people reached out to schedule meetings or calls based on the post, which is always welcome.
I spent a week in western Germany visiting companies in the automotive (particularly EV), life science, IT, chemical and industrial sectors. Interest in the US is strong. The American market is a global magnet. German companies have a storied history of investing in South Carolina. Sometimes our market was a sufficient draw to attract interest from the firms. Others are drawn to “localization” of supply chains – manufacture in Europe for the European market, in China for the Asian market, and in the US for the North American market.
My trip will presage a busy 2022 for our CRDA team. Get prepared to see a number of similar blogs summarizing international business interest in Charleston. Our in-market activity has been close to our all-time high for the past two months. We look forward to working with our public- and private-sector stakeholders to attract more successful companies to our market, from Germany and around the world.
