It’s not the biggest plant to relocate to Dorchester County, nor the largest employer.

But Aamsco Lighting Inc. is moving its headquarters and production operations from Jersey City, N.J., to Summerville in August. And it can claim the distinction of having a product in Steven Spielberg’s bathroom in his Trump Tower apartment.

Formed 26 years ago, the company makes light fixtures primarily for bathrooms and kitchens. Aamsco works through designers and architects for the rich and famous, said Bob Rosenzweig, president and owner.

“We make custom – high end,” Rosenzweig said. The company relies on craftsmen in such exotic places as the Czech Republic. At least one of its designs is 24-carat gold.

Aamsco is moving because the company has outgrown its current space. The closest suitable spot in New Jersey was 70 miles away.

Rosenzweig said since it would result in a mostly new work force anyway, he decided to relocate to the South for its warmer climate.

The executive eyed Sarasota, Fla. – near where it has a plant – and Asheville, N.C., before settling on Summerville.

The company plans to move into a 12,000-square-foot building on U.S. Highway 78 near the Dorchester County Airport. It expects to employ 15 to 25 people to start with. The higher figure depends on the timing of a sideline project involving infrared heating systems for automobiles that are supposed to improve the appearance of paint work, he said.
