The Asian population is the fastest-growing racial group in the country, and its growth in South Carolina and particularly in the Charleston area slightly outpaces the national average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest report.
The group may be small — it makes up 2 percent of the state’s population, and slightly more locally — but it has more than doubled in the past 15 years. Since 2010, the Asian population in South Carolina has grown by a quarter, and a significant amount of that growth has been in the tri-county area.
Carina Lam, whose husband owns the H&L Asian Market, said most of the customers at the Rivers Avenue store are Asian-American.
