Fueled by visitor spending, ongoing expansion and military operations, Charleston International Airport creates a juggernaut of jobs and money for South Carolina, according to a new study.
The state’s busiest passenger terminal, the flocks of tourists it brings and Charleston Air Force Base pump $4.5 billion a year into the Palmetto State’s economy and support nearly 35,000 jobs, according to a 2022 study by research economist Joey Von Nessen of the University of South Carolina.
Von Nessen called the airport “an economic pillar” of the state and noted the recent $4.5 billion value is reflective of all goods and services produced statewide that can be attributed directly or indirectly to CHS.
