U.S. News & World Report ranked four South Carolina colleges in its category for regional universities in the South.

The publication ranked The Citadel 5th, College of Charleston 11th, Converse College 17th and Winthrop University 21st.

The Citadel was the top-ranked public college in the category.

In its regional university category, U.S. News & World Report includes colleges that offer several undergraduate programs, some masters programs and few doctoral programs.

The category includes more than 600 colleges and ranks them against regional peers because they generally draw students from surrounding states instead of across the country.
