NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Two mammoth pieces of equipment are arriving at what will be the world’s largest wind turbine testing facility.

A four-story tall gearbox and a giant steel connecting ring are to arrive on Thursday at Clemson’s Wind Turbine Drive Train Testing Facility on the Cooper River in North Charleston.

The equipment will be part of a 400-ton unit capable of testing drive trains for turbines that can produce 15 megawatts of power. That’s enough to generate power for 6,000 homes.

When completed, the nearly $100 million testing facility will be the world’s largest and employ about 80 people. There are two other such testing facilities, one in Spain and one in Colorado. But the Clemson test site will handle far larger units.
