Sprinter sales zoom 1 year after Mercedes picks North Charleston

It’s been slightly more than a year since Mercedes-Benz Vans sped into town to announce a $500 million expansion of its North Charleston plant. The Sprinter maker apparently hasn’t let off the gas.

The Daimler AG brand this month trotted out some fast-paced financial figures for 2015, despite what it called “an inconsistent market environment worldwide.”

For example, total van sales accelerated 9 percent to a record 321,000 vehicles, including 194,200 Sprinters. Revenue surged 15 percent to $12.85 billion for the division. Earnings before interest and taxes zoomed higher by nearly a third, or $983 million.

On top of that, Mercedes-Benz Vans just celebrated the delivery of its 3 millionth Sprinter, a brand that Daimler created 21 years ago.

Overall, 2015 was “outstanding” in terms of performance, said Volker Mornhinweg, who runs the division.
