Celebrate Charleston Navy Week with the Blue Angels

This week is Charleston Navy Week, which aims to give the public an up-close look at the men and women of the U.S. Navy serving throughout the world and the jobs they do. There have been various activities going on around the Charleston area to celebrate, but this weekend’s events are certainly the icing on the cake with a Blue Angels air show over the Charleston Harbor.

You can view the show from Mt. Pleasant or downtown. Here’s some tips for viewing from Live 5 News:

On the Charleston side you can watch from Waterfront park, or on the lawn next to the maritime center, or at Liberty Square near the aquarium, or at White Point Gardens or anywhere along the Battery.

On the Mt. Pleasant side of the harbor, the best spot is Patriots Point either on top of the USS Yorktown or the parking lot, but keep in mind, normal fees do apply.

“There will be street closures and plenty of congestion we’re asking people to carpool if they can and be patient,” said Ruppell.

Parking garages throughout the peninsula will have a $5 flat rate. But you can’t watch it from the top level due to safety issues. There will also be shuttles running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

“The shuttles will pick people up from the Brittlebank park area and bring them to two locations: Waterfront Park and White Point gardens,” said Ruppell.

From Thursday through Sunday, the Cooper River Bridge pedestrian and biking lane will be closed 30 minutes prior to practice and the shows, as well as the driving lane closest to the pedestrian lane.

If you can’t make it this weekend to catch the air show, the Angels will be conducting practice flights between 11:30 and 2pm, and again between 3-4 p.m. today.
