Cuban Art Comes to Charleston

Head over to the City Gallery (34 Prioleau St.) tonight from 6-8 p.m. for the opening reception of Polaridad Complementaria, an art show featuring pieces from 24 Cuban artists and 40 pieces. The show’s central theme is addressing social issues in Cuba, and educating viewers on present-day Cuba.

Prominent and lesser-known artists will display paintings, sculptures, drawings, photography, video and installation art. According to an article in Post & Courier, “Some of these artists have phenomenal reputations in other parts of the world but are little known in the U.S. One of the illusions we have here is that just because we have imposed an embargo on Cuba, everyone else has, too.”

The Charleston exhibit is part of the International Arts & Artists tour, which “focuses on global concerns in a local context while opening a channel for dialogue and cultural exchange between Cuba and the U.S. Organizers hope to that this show will start the conversation between Cuba and the United States. If you can’t make it by tonight, don’t fret, the show will be on display until March 28.
