Two new movies will be shot in the Palmetto State later this year, including one from the author of the best-selling novel “The Notebook”:

• “Dear John,” based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks , is about a soldier and conservative college girl who try to maintain a long-distance relationship after 9/11. The New Line production will be shot along the S.C. coast just like the movie version of Sparks’ “The Notebook.”

• “Band of Angels” traces the history of the Fisk University Jubilee Singers who helped make spirituals popular. The post-Civil War movie made by Hallmark Hall of Fame Productions will be shot around Charleston. No start dates for shooting have been announced.

“Both productions are quality family entertainment that will offer a positive reflection of South Carolina,” the S.C. Department of Commerce said in its announcement.

The two movies shot in S.C. this year have had mature themes.

“Nailed,” a political satire with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel about a woman who becomes sexually crazed after an accident, just finished shooting around Columbia.

“The New Daughter,” a thriller with Kevin Costner as a father who suspects a burial mound is making his family act strangely, completed filming on the coast last month.

Both movies are due out next year.
