BB&T will move its coastal region headquarters from Florence to Charleston during the next few weeks.

The decision to move the headquarters was made to take advantage of Charleston’s population growth during recent years and its escalating economy, BB&T officials said in a press release issued Tuesday.

BB&T, the nation’s ninth largest financial holding company, will be the only multi-state bank with a regional headquarters in Charleston.

The coastal region recently finished second overall out of 34 BB&T regions in BB&T’s annual President’s Award competition, the highest internal award at BB&T. The President’s Award recognizes elite performance in customer service, profitability, growth and balance sheet quality.

BB&T has divided its network into autonomous regions, each with its own president, which operate like community banks.

BB&T operates more than 1,400 financial centers in the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Indiana and Washington, D.C.
