On business: Charleston’s hospitality focus shifts to foreign firms

Thanks in large part to its port, Charleston has long been an international business destination, anchored by blue-chip global employers such as Boeing Co., Mercedes-Benz and Robert Bosch. Even so, there’s always room to improve, to keep the ball rolling.

That’s the thought behind a new plan that calls for a “more comprehensive approach to our international engagement” by shining a brighter spotlight on investment and jobs from abroad, with an emphasis on key target industries such as aerospace.

“Attracting and supporting foreign direct investment … is a foundational element of our region’s global competitiveness,” according to a summary of the strategy, which was unveiled Thursday by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance and other collaborators. “For the economic health and well-being of our entire three-county region, we must ensure Charleston offers what multinational corporations need to succeed.”
