Riding a surge of imports, container volume through the Port of Charleston continued its upward path in September, increasing 10% from the same month last year.

Charleston’s total container volume in September topped 131,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent units), compared to 118,000 TEU last year.

This followed an all-time record month in August when Charleston, the nation’s fourth busiest container port, handled 149,000 TEU.

Loaded inbound containers through Charleston rose 14% from September 2001. Meanwhile, loaded export container volume was off 2% from last year. Empty export TEU rose 54% in September from the same month last year, as containers were repositioned to overseas markets.

Through the first quarter of fiscal year 2003 (July – September), total Charleston container volume increased 11% to 409,000 TEU, up from 367,000 TEU in the same period last year.
