Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina will split a $9 million federal grant to research things such as tissue-engineered heart valves to nanoparticles that track contamination in meat.

On Tuesday, the National Science Foundation awarded the grant to the state’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), which is a partnership with the state’s three research universities.

“We need to capitalize on the research strengths of our universities to meet our strategic objectives of participating in the knowledge-based economy,” said Larry Druffel, project director.

The award will help nanoscience and bioengineering research at Clemson and structural and chemical biology research at MUSC. The money will be used for more faculty.
