France-based manufacturer adds new laboratory and office building to local manufacturing unit

For Immediate Release
May 1, 2003

MAY 21, 2003 – Rhodia, a France-based manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals, has expanded its operations in Charleston with the addition of a new laboratory and office building. This $3 million expansion adds 8,640 square feet to the company’s local manufacturing unit. Today’s announcement was facilitated by the Charleston Regional Development Alliance.

The addition of the R&D function to the company’s Charleston operation was prompted by the continued development of new products for the Phosphorus and Performance Deliveries (PPD) Enterprise. Charleston is the main North American site for the PPD Enterprise, which manufactures a variety of products used in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, construction and other industries. The new laboratory is designed to accommodate up to 16 chemists.

According to company officials, the PPD research function was relocated from Richmond, VA as part of Rhodia’s purchase of Albright & Wilson, which was headquartered there.

“Having the research group here in Charleston will have a significant, positive impact on our ability to meet changing market demands,” said Richard Kennedy, Rhodia’s PPD Enterprise President. “The chemists in our R&D group can now directly interact with the operators and engineers in our manufacturing facility, increasing efficiency and improving our manufacturing processes.”

Gene Williams, Chairman of the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, welcomed news of the expansion, noting: “The chemical industry has long been a critical component of our region’s economy. By choosing the Charleston region for this R&D operation, Rhodia proves that we continue to have the right ingredients for this highly technical industry. “

“A hearty congratulations goes out to Rhodia,” said Timothy E. Scott, Chairman of Charleston County Council. “This company sank roots in Charleston two centuries ago, and we are grateful that they have grown their business alongside the community. They are a model for corporate-neighborhood relations, and this infusion of R&D further grows the Charleston stable of brainpower. We wish them continued success,” Scott said.

Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., also welcomed Rhodia’s expansion. “For many years, this world-class manufacturer has provided excellent career opportunities for our citizens. The company’s new R&D operation will significantly expand these opportunities. We welcome their reinvestment – and confidence – in the Charleston community.”

In its efforts to diversify and strengthen Charleston’s regional economy, the Alliance works with many organizations. An especially important relationship is with the State of South Carolina.

“Research and development are essential as we move the state into the new economy,” said Secretary of Commerce Bob Faith. “We congratulate Rhodia on its decision to stay and grow in South Carolina.”

Rhodia (www.rhodia-ppd.com) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of specialty chemicals, and provides a range of innovative products and services to eight key markets: consumer care, food, industrial care, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, automotive, electronics and fibers.
