A local pharmaceutical company is teaming up with an Arizona biotech firm in hopes of bolstering the fight against the deadly avian flu virus.

GenPhar Inc. of Mount Pleasant and ImmuneRegen BioSciences said they will study how Viprovex, a compound developed by ImmuneRegen, could increase the effectiveness of GenPhar’s vaccine for avian flu, also known as bird flu.

The vaccine has not yet received government approval. The research will be done at GenPhar’s local offices, the companies said Thursday.
