MUSC cited for success in garnering federal funding

CHARLESTON — The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is the only institution in South Carolina listed as one of the top 100 universities and colleges in the nation for garnering federal dollars for science and engineering, according to a report published this month by the National Science Foundation entitled “Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions for FY 2002.”

MUSC is listed as receiving $91.1 million in federal funds, ranking 81st in the nation. The report also indicates yearly dollar amounts for each institution since 1995. The MUSC figure has nearly tripled since 1995 when $32.2 million were received.

“We are very pleased to be included in this prestigious ranking of national institutions,” said MUSC President Ray Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D. “I’m especially proud that our ranking has gone up from 91st to 81st since last year’s report. And given the recent large influx of federal dollars we have seen, it is likely to rise even higher when next year’s report is generated. This is a reflection of the caliber of our faculty and their ability to garner these very competitive federal research dollars.”

In addition to listing the top 100 national institutions, the report also lists every university, college and non-profit institution receiving federal dollars for science and engineering in FY 2002 broken down by state. It lists 19 South Carolina institutions, including MUSC and indicates that federal dollars for science and engineering going to these 19 South Carolina institutions total $189.5 million. MUSC’s $91.1 million represents nearly half of all federal dollars going to South Carolina’s 19 institutions.
