SCRA MUSC Innovation Center, Charleston, welcomes new tenant Restorative Physiology Group

Restorative Physiology Group is the latest tenant to move into the SCRA MUSC Innovation Center, Charleston, at 645 Meeting Street since the facility opened in December, 2009. Restorative Physiology, an SC Launch company, develops orthopedic implants and methods for “least invasive” deployment of these devices to treat patients with common spine disease. Continue reading

Safe Ports wins military contract

A Charleston-based logistics company recently beat out seven bigger players to land a $30 million military contract in Afghanistan. Safe Ports has won a five-year deal with the Defense Logistics Agency, the supply and distribution arm of the U.S. military, to operate a new center at Kandahar Air Field. That means Safe Ports employees will make deliveries to troops, including clothing, fuel and spare parts. Continue reading

Creative industries contribute to Lowcountry jobs, economy

The Charleston Regional Development Alliance and New Carolina recognized the impact of the region’s creative industries and worked together to develop a creative cluster for the Lowcountry. The cluster focuses on areas such as preservation and restoration, cultural heritage, architecture and urban design, performing arts, visual arts, culinary arts, literature and publishing, and digital media and design. From the cluster, a leadership group called Charleston’s Creative Parliament formed and seeks to attract, nurture and grow related companies. Continue reading

MUSC endowed chair to develop technology promoting healthy lifestyles

Through the S.C. Centers of Economic Excellence program, the Medical University of South Carolina has recruited Dr. Frank Treiber to lead the Technology Center to Advance Healthful Lifestyles. Frank Treiber - CoEE He and other researchers at the center will develop technology to help all South Carolinians — and especially rural and underserved populations — make more healthful lifestyle choices. Panama could open floodgates for Charleston

As the 96-year-old Panama Canal undergoes a $5 billion expansion that will allow many of the world’s largest cargo ships to pass through its locks, a delegation from the Charleston area saw the project first-hand recently. The 23-person group from South Carolina that included port officials, business leaders and state lawmakers spent two days in Central America meeting with Panama Canal Authority leaders and touring the facilities. Four S.C. technical colleges receive more than $1.7 million

Four state technical colleges will receive $1.7 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. announced. Groundbreaking set for $98 million turbine drive train testing facility

The Clemson University Restoration Institute will break ground October 28 on a $98 million wind turbine drive train facility at its North Charleston, S.C. campus. It is seen as both a milestone in the economic development in a state hard hit by the recession, and as a cornerstone of efforts to place the Southeast US at the forefront of the “renewable energy economy,” said Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, its director of business development.
