Patent approved for hybrid spread spectrum technology licensed by Navigational Sciences

Navigational Sciences Inc. News Release
July 18, 2006

Nearly six years in the making, officials with the U.S. Patent Office have approved the initial patent for the new Hybrid Spread Spectrum (HSS) technology licensed and marketed by Navigational Sciences Inc. The newly patented “HSS Technique for Expanding Channel Capacity” technology exceeds capabilities seen in previous data communications systems with its ability to communicate around barriers and to provide enhanced levels of security in data transfer.

“After arduous review, the scientists and researchers at the patent office have found this technology to be unlike any before it. Given its complexity, it took a great deal of time to be proven as truly novel,” said Eric Dobson, president and CEO of NavSciTM. “Working closely with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, we’re excited about applying this technology to make significant advances in the field of data tracking and communications,” he added.

NavSci sponsored development of this technology through a “Cooperative Research and Development Agreement” with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and currently holds the license to develop and market all fields of use for this application.

ORNL developer Steve Smith commented, “With increased flexibility and the ability to transmit in very difficult signal environments, the NavSci applications utilizing this new HSS technology can positively affect manufacturing and logistics processes on a global scale, optimizing security and maximizing efficiency in the supply chain. HSS represents a paradigm shift in technology and should enable a wide range of new useful and cost-effective solutions to tough communications problems.”

With its total asset visibility suite of products, NavSci develops systems to monitor the location and condition of fixed or mobile assets such as trucks, rail cars and overseas shipping containers.

The new technology will be marketed under NavSci’s Wave Additive Radio Processing (“WARP Wireless”) brand name for next generation radio frequency identification to track and monitor assets and cargo for industries including shipping, private security and governmental agencies. Beginning in 2007, the technology will be implemented in NavSci’s WARP 3.0 product and future generations.

Navigational Sciences Inc., founded in 2000 and based in Charleston, S.C., develops and delivers tracking and data communication systems capable of monitoring security where other technologies may fail. NavSci specializes in tracking mobile assets, including hazardous materials, trucks, rail cars and overseas shipping containers. Utilizing emerging technologies, Navigational Sciences customizes data tracking and communications systems that overcome the physical and environmental barriers that hamper reception and tracking of resources and information.
