Charleston will now have $100,000 more dollars to fight hunger in our community thanks to Walmart’s Fighting Hunger Together Facebook campaign.

A big push was made by local businesses and individuals encouraging friends to vote for the Charleston area over the holidays. Charleston (Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville area) began in 63rd place around Christmas and took the final runner-up spot (#5 with over 167,000 votes) to earn $100,000 for the Lowcountry Food Bank. Columbia, SC also was also a $100,000 recipient.

According to info on Walmart’s hunger site, 20.7% of families in the Charleston area cannot afford regular meals. The prize will go directly to the Lowcountry Food Bank, and it’s asking the community to pledge their support year round!
