Summer is ending and interns are heading back to university for what are likely to be their final semesters before graduation. Where will they choose to launch their careers post-grad? We hope the Charleston region is at the top of their list!

With talent in high demand across the nation, CRDA, in partnership with the Charleston Metro Chamber, produced the second annual Charleston Intern Network Series to encourage summer interns in the region to consider our metro as an excellent location to establish themselves professionally.

At the beginning of the summer, more than half of the participants indicated they were unsure where they plan to start their career after graduation – making them the perfect audience to share why Charleston is a great place to live and work.

The 2023 Charleston Intern Network Series (“The Series”) was comprised of three events featuring information about the region, professional guidance, and local networking opportunities – while also showcasing the wonderful Charleston lifestyle we enjoy.

• June 8: ‘Young Executives Panel’ discussed early career tips and strategies (Daniel Island)
• June 21: ‘Night at The Joe’ featured mini keynote addresses from regional leaders and a complimentary Charleston RiverDogs baseball game (Downtown Charleston)
• July 13: ‘Connections & Conversations’ casual event to hone networking skills and build peer connections (Park Circle)

The Series served approximately 300 interns representing more than 40 companies and a wide variety of industries, including engineering, manufacturing and information technology. This diverse group included native South Carolinians, as well as participants from across the globe!

It was inspiring to hear these emerging professionals pepper guest speakers with well thought out questions about mentorship, standing out in a competitive job market, and the value of community engagement. One guest speaker even remarked they had not anticipated such strong questions and were incredibly impressed by the mindset of these participants.

I found it personally rewarding to be part of this important initiative again this year and am especially grateful to all the sponsors who supported The Series’ goal of retaining young talent within our market.
